School Strike for Climate Justice organized in Satkhira

At the occasion of Global Climate Action Week, LEDARS organized School Strike, Climate March and Mass Gathering demanding climate justice in Shyamnagar of Satkhira district at 21 September 2019. The march was started in front of Press club and end through mass gathering at Shyamnagar bus stand. The meeting was presided over by Freedom Fighter Master Nazrul Islam, Vice-chairman of LEDARS executive committee.

Though Bangladesh is not responsible for global climate change but one of the worse victims of climate change. People are suffering salinity, frequent cyclone, drinking water scarcity, flood, drought etc. People have rights to compensation for loss and damages. Global leaders have signed a number of agreements on climate change to compensate the suffering nations and reduce global carbon emission. But those agreement was only and paper, not effective. Global leaders are already passed 24 years for the name of negotiations, but nothing find in this regards. Word leaders have failed to bring hopes of the next generation. Greta Thunberg a 16 year-old Swedish school student who started protest and world community supporting her. Her organization ‘Fridays for Future’ youth and student to protest inactiveness of world leaders called the student and youth to come out in the street and stand up for climate justice. LEDARS involved with this campaign and organized different protest in the past. Global Climate Action Week has been observing around the world from 20-27. As part of the global campaign LEDARS took a massive campaign for climate justice. This event was organization as part of week long program.  

In the street meeting Maima Jaman Nupur, Student of Nakipur Secondary Girls’ School, Samul Islam Munna, Student of Nakipur Government HC Model Secondary School student, Mohan Kumar Mondal, Executive Director of LEDARS; Dr. Muhammad Abdul Mannan, Head Teacher of HC Model Secondary School, Nakipur; Md. Saiful Islam, President of Shyamnagar Youth Forum;  Md.Kamrul Islam, President of Iswaripur Youth Forum;  Md. Sojib Hossain, Secretary of Mothurespur Youth Forum ; Ujjal Hossain,  Mutala Union Youth Forum leaders were delivered their speech. In the meeting, the youth people demanding that developed countries should compensate the sufferer, increase target of NDC to keep temperature raise in 1.5 degree, activate Paris Agreement take immediate action to cut emission, increase finance for adaptation and loss and damage, etc.
