Salinity is increasing in coastal areas due to the effects of climate change. Besides; irrigation water is scarce in Boro(dry season) season due to irregular rainfall. In order to make the agricultural system sustainable by overcoming various crises including shortage of irrigation water in Boro season, on 15th December (Wednesday) 4,630 KG stress tolerance rice seeds were distributed among 463 farmers of Shyamnagar and Asssuni under Satkhira District and Koyra Upazila under the Khulna district. The distribution ceremony was inaugurated by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Mr. A. N. M. Abuzar Ghiffary at his Office Premises. He attended as the Prime Guest of this inauguration program. The rice seed distribution ceremony was presided over by Freedom Fighter, Master Nazrul Islam, Vice President, Executive Committee, LEDARS, Mr. S.M. Enamul Islam, Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer, Shyamnagar, Upazila, Mr. Mohon Kumar Modal, Executive Director and SM Monwar Hossain, Program Manager, LEDARS participated there. In his speech the chief guest said, “After the distribution of paddy, the Agriculture Extension Officers and LEDARS should monitor to ensure the seed planting. Hon’ble Prime Minister of the Government of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina wants to ensure food security in the country. That is why more stress tolerant rice seeds need to be distributed in the coastal areas.”
