LEDARS distributed Saline, drought and water logging tolerant paddy and saline resistant vegetable seed among 756 farmers. Farmers in the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh could not grow paddy and vegetable as usual. LEDARS has been working with farmers and vulnerable women to increase adaptive capacity to climate change by the project “Strengthening Livelihood Security of Climate Change Vulnerable People”. under the project, LEDARS distributed saline, drought and flood resistant paddy seeds vegetable seeds among beneficiaries.
At 23 June 2018 LEDARS distributed vegetable seeds and organic fertilizer among 404 farmers and 25th June 2018 distributed 3.5 ton paddy seeds among 351 farmers. A total of 756 farmers received paddy and vegetable seeds. Seed are distributed in the four Union of Shyamnagar Upazila where 256 farmers were from Burigoalini, Munshigonj, Kashimari union of Shyamnagar Upazila and 95 farmer were from Uttar Debkashi union of Koira Upaziala.
The distribution ceremony organized at Center for Coastal Climate Resilient (C3R). The both program was presided over by Mr. Mohon Kumar Mondal, Executive Director and Founder of LEDARS. Mr. Sujan Sarkar, Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer was the chief guest of the distribution ceremony. Md. Abul Hossain Miah, Upazila Agriculture Officer, Mr. Akbor Ali Par, Panel Chairman and UP member of 7 no Munshigonj Union Parisad, Mr. Parvez Kamal, SAAO of Munshigonj Union was present as Special Guest. The guests discussed on different technical aspect of seed like good characteristics of seed, seed treatment and seedbed preparation. Mr. Mohon Kumar Mondal, Chair Person of the program clarified the objectives of saline and water logging tolerant paddy seed distribution. He said that farmers will be more resilient to climate change particularly in the rice production through follow proper cultivation management practices of the variety. He also gave emphasis on production and preservation of seed at local level. Beside this he suggested not to use the seed as food and sell purpose. LEDARS have been working with climate vulnerable farmer since 2003 with a view to promote climate resilient crops to reduce the risk due to climate change at crop production level.
